Isotope method

The geographic origin of prune samples was studied analysing the isotopic relationships of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) of prune fractions including the pulp (with peel), seeds and peel. This study was developed collecting 48 samples of prunes originating from South Tyrol, Emilia Romagna, Udine, Tyrol, Austria, Germany and Bosnia.

All samples were fractioned yielding 144 prune fractions (pulp, seeds and peel). The results obtained show heightened variability in the values of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). This variability due to multiple factors, including the level maturity, variety etc., did not allow for correct classification of samples based on their geographic origin.
